Sierra Vista Child and Family Services

Sierra Vista Child and Family Services is a non-profit organization that receives funding from the United Way of Merced County for their Parent Project Merced program. The Parent Project is a community-based parent training program designed to teach parents of difficult children strategies in prevention, identification and intervention.

The Parent Project program is currently being used in a number of communities to educate the parents of at-risk high-risk children and youth. The program was initially developed through the collective efforts of law enforcement, educators, school administration officials, and mental health professionals. Over the past 20-years the project has gained momentum and is now utilized in the United States in 36 different states, Mexico and Canada.

The program utilizes a solution focused approach and helps parents to prioritize misbehavior and make appropriate decisions about how to manage the problem behavior. The program is also activity-based and allows parents to utilize a variety of effective parenting skills they develop through program training.

Sierra Vista Child and Family Services has been providing services in Merced County through the Merced County Office of Education for the past several years in their Special Education Services division and is currently working toward incorporating their program into the schools to ultimately be available to the parents of children with special needs. The long-term goal of the program is to educate parents about various behavioral modification techniques to deal with problem behaviors and ultimately reduce the frequency and level of the behaviors.
