The
Salvation Army
The
Salvation Army is a non-profit organization dedicated
to assisting people by responding to an ever-growing litany
of needs. Many of the people seeking help from the organization
are looking for basic necessities of life, e.g., food,
shelter and warmth. The United Way of Merced County provides
funding to assist the organization with their Food and
Crisis Assistance program. The primary goal of this program
is to provide services to the needy and respond to crisis.
Last year employees and volunteers of the Merced Chapter
provided over 34,000 sit-down meals and another 7,500
mini-meals to children all over Merced County.
Needs come in a number of forms - emotional, physical,
social and spiritual. The Food and Crisis assistance program
meets people at their point of need and offers whatever
is needed most that the agency has available. The homeless,
unemployed, lonely, victims of domestic violence, those
affected by disaster, young and old regardless of age,
race, creed or national origin, are included among those
assisted. Staff and volunteers offer counseling, physical
and spiritual comfort in time of disaster and devastation,
blankets for the homeless, transportation, clothes, medical
assistance, and a listening ear.
It is an amazing fact that many people in this country,
including many people in Merced County, go hungry everyday.
It is the Salvation Army’s goal to try and meet
the basic needs of the community. For more information
about services offered by the Merced Chapter of the Salvation
Army you may call (209) 383-4225.
