Merced
Lao Family Community, Inc.
It
is Merced Lao Family Community’s mission to assist
new Merced County Southeast Asian Hmong-American refugees
with resources necessary to become self-sufficient and
encourage self-respect. Merced County proudly hosts a
wide spectrum of differing cultures with very diverse
backgrounds. While it is important to preserve these diverse
cultural heritages, it is equally important to provide
a means for differing populations to transition smoothly
into the community.
The participants in this program, who were recently living
in an infinitely different environment in a Buddhist temple
in Thailand, are receiving instructional assistance from
staff and volunteers associated with the Lao Family Community.
While it is important that the participants learn more
about our culture in Merced County, it is also important
to maintain pride in their cultural heritage and traditions.
United Way or Merced County currently funds the New Hmong
Refugee Health and Cleanliness Program serving a total
of 25 new Hmong American refugee families. The program
places emphasis on self-empowerment and provides participants
with valuable information on nutrition, health, personal
hygiene and safety related issues. These services are
provided in-home and each family is provided with a variety
of cleaning products. Each family receives a mop, toilet
cleaner/brush, floor cleaner, dish soap and dish rags
along with two hours of education and instruction on cleanliness
and safety issues.
The Merced Loa Family Community, Inc. has provided over
24 years of service to the Southeast Asian population
within Merced County and can be reached at (209) 384-7384.
