Merced
County Food Bank
Merced County Food Bank
is a private non-profit organization that grew out of
community collaboration to feed the hungry in the local
area. A board of Directors consisting of representatives
from most of the cities in Merced County is responsible
for running the Food Bank.
There are more than 45,000
people, many of them children and seniors, living below
the poverty level in Merced County. Merced County Food
Bank serves as a communal bridge between those in need
of food and those who are willing to share what they have.
The Food Bank is in partnership
with 68 area pantries and manages 17 USDA food distribution
sites. In addition the Food Bank operates the Senior Brown
Bag Program providing food twice a month to about 1,400
very low-income elders in Merced County
In October of 2004, the
Merced County Food Bank opened its doors to a new site,
2000 W. Olive Avenue, Merced, providing 32,000 square
feet of storage space with a small freezer and huge walk-in
refrigeration capacity. With a major contribution from
the Merced County Board of Supervisors, they will install
a large walk-in freezer in 2010.
