Healthy
House
Healthy House is a non-profit
agency that receives funding from the United Way of Merced
County for their Newcomer Friendship Support Group. The
program is designed to improve the health of Southeast
Asian adults that have recently immigrated into the United
States. Program goals are met by helping the participants
to decrease their social isolation, educating them about
American culture and introducing them to a variety of
community resources available to meet their basic needs.
The program allows the participants to be able to use
public transportation services to venture into the community,
go on field trips and learn more about their new surroundings.
Through being exposed to a variety of guest speakers,
participants are educated on a variety of health issues
including the importance of taking prescribed medications,
personal hygiene, healthy diet and how to manage personal
stress. Field trips to mainstream grocery stores, the
Courthouse Museum, Merced City Hall or touring facilities
like Foster Farms, participants are able to become more
comfortable with their new home.
