Cerebral
Palsy Association
The Cerebral Palsy Association of Merced County is an
organization whose chief objective is to provide support
services to people who are affected by Cerebral Palsy.
More often than not, young families lack the financial
resources to pay for these services and equipment on their
own or even with insurance.
Through
organizations like United Way of Merced County, the Cerebral
Palsy Association of Merced County and other organizations,
families are able to receive many costly services that
would otherwise be unavailable. Cerebral Palsy is a neurological
disorder that appears in infancy or early childhood. Cerebral
Palsy permanently affects body movement and muscle coordination
and often requires costly equipment and specialized services.
Through their “Support for Physically Impaired and
Their Families” program, the Cerebral Palsy Association
of Merced County raises money to provide emergency support
to families, acquire specialized equipment and better
provide access to services. While Cerebral Palsy can’t
be cured, treatment will often improve a child's capabilities
Services may include physical therapy; speech therapy;
therapy to relax muscle spasms and alleviate pain; seizure
medications; surgery to correct anatomical abnormalities
or release tight muscles; braces and other orthotic devices;
rolling walkers and wheelchairs; and communication aids
such as computers.
With
early intervention, many children are able to enjoy near-normal
adult lives. With early treatment, children have a better
chance of overcoming developmental disabilities or learning
new ways to accomplish the tasks that challenge them.
