Boys
and Girls Club of Merced County
The
Boys and Girls Club of Merced is a nonprofit agency providing
outreach services and after school programs to Merced
youth. Seeking different approaches to serve the needs
of Merced area youth, B&GC utilizes a number of various
resources, means and approaches. B&GC is in the process
of developing a program designed to assist older youth
in preparing to transition from youth into adulthood.
The
new program, called Project Job Ready is in response to
high unemployment rates that prevent local youth from
acquiring good jobs and becoming productive members of
the community. For years, Merced County has been plagued
with high unemployment. The new program is designed to
assist many disadvantaged and at-risk youth, who might
otherwise fall through the cracks, by improving their
job skills. Because of the more relaxed and comfortable
atmosphere at B&GC, many members feel more at ease
working with staff members in utilizing the various resources
available via other local community organizations. This
opens the door for many of the program participants to
have available a multitude of job preparation services.
One of the goals set forth in Project Job Ready is to
develop a trained workforce within their own membership
that is knowledgeable in delivering after-school services.
It
is anticipated that B&GC members that matriculate
through the program will be able to enter the local labor-force
with essential knowledge and skills and ultimately help
them to become better citizens. For more information about
B&GC, call 722-9922.
