Alpha
Crisis Pregnancy Help Center
The
Alpha Pregnancy Help Center is currently receiving funding
from the United Way of Merced County for their Turning
Points program. The Turning Points program provides parenting
skills to pregnant young women and encourages them to
make responsible choices. The program participants work
with staff and volunteers that ultimately become mentors
and role models thereby setting positive standards that
the young women can learn from.
Because many young women in Merced County are not prepared
for motherhood, the Turning Points program offers incentives
to encourage program participation. Many of these young
women come from homes with little parental guidance and
are at risk of having premature birth, medical complications,
unhealthy family relations and making poor choices in
the future. The program is designed to address these issues
by providing incentives that encourage the program participants
to take part in learning a variety of much needed skills.
Incentives
are offered in a system of points. Points are earned for
attending classes or watching videos on subjects like
fetal development, prenatal health, child birth and parenting.
Health, proper nutrition and safety classes are also part
of the curriculum available. With the accumulation of
points, the young women are able to acquire much-needed
items such as cribs, car seats, clothing and other items
for the new baby.
The goal of the program is to transform lives by changing
attitudes through education. Through this approach, a
turning point is hopefully achieved for young women who
would otherwise remain at risk.
